While mainstream car manufacturers briefly flirted with digital instruments in the 1980s, the concept never really took off in factory cars.

Drivers soon marveled at the digital dashboard that didn't work, the malfunctioning electrical system, and failing transmission. Each generation has its signature popular culture atmosphere, and in the 80s part of the popular culture involved flashy cars and flashy interiors to match. However, digital dashboards weren’t that popular with drivers at the time, and most cars today still use an analogue speedometer alongside the digital displays.

Heck, they already had touchscreens in cars back then, so yeah. Boy, did chrysler take a bath on this one. Once you are used to this sort of display, it is very easy to register the figure for the car's speed, instead of having to note the position of a needle on a dial as on the old speedometer.

American cars were really the only ones to retain their electronic instruments and improve them all through the 1990s too, in contrast to manufacturers from other continents who ditched them much quicker. There were cars manufactured on all continents in the 1980s that offered cool digital dials, and some of the coolest came straight out of japan. After much hype, the imperial was little more than a dodge aspen with extra sheet metal, which slowed down what power the 5.2 v8 could produce. A more modern car that also used that style was the s2000 which i always admired. They were so fabulous that i decided to share a sampling of them with you here today.
